The young boys, aged eight, died in the 80C underground conduit after one of them initially tumbled into it and the other two tried to mount a rescue effort.
They have been named as Daniil Slisarenko, Alexander Sanko and Daniil Viik, from the Russian city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.
It is claimed the tragedy took place after a hole in the sewer in the grounds of their school did not get repaired quickly enough.
Local reports claim that a wooden decking covering the hot sewer broke or collapsed, leaving a two-and-a-half metre hole.

Yevgeny Sivayev, a local newspaper publisher, said: "It is no exaggeration to say that the city is crying. Such grief we have not had before.
"It is impossible to look at children - their bodies are packed in bags."
Disturbing images showed their remains in black bags in the snow at the site of the incident.
