Suicide pact: Wendy Zabrocki did not want her husband Melvyn to die alone

A wife who agreed to join her husband in a suicide pact survived and woke to find him lying dead next to her, an inquest heard.

Wendy Zabrocki, 55, downed a lethal cocktail of drugs and alcohol with her husband Melvyn, 63, who had battled with mental illness.
The couple left detailed suicide notes to their three adult children before lying down on their bed to die together.
But the hearing was told Wendy survived and called emergency services when she woke the following morning.
Detective Constable Nicky Devine gave evidence saying: "Wendy remembers being on the bed and going to sleep quite quickly, although she does remember getting up and being sick.
"She doesn't remember anything else apart from waking up in the morning, when she discovered Melvyn who appeared to be deceased.
"There was no evidence of anyone else's involvement or other injuries.
"Letters were found addressed to the family, which were farewell suicide notes."
The hearing was told shopkeeper Melvyn had struggled with depression for nearly three decades.

When he told wife-of-35-years Wendy he planned to end his life she did not want him to die alone.
DC Devine added: "Melvyn had been saying to Wendy that he wanted to take his own life and he was going to do it with or without her.
"He told her he was going to leave the house and do it on his own if she was not going to do it with him. Wendy didn't want him to be on his own."
Neighbours at the couple's five-bedroom home in Folkestone, Kent, were shocked by the double suicide bid in November last year.
One man said: "I think they had a lot of problems. It's so sad.
"They always seemed nice but quiet, and you could tell he wasn't very happy."
Another neighbour, who asked to remain anonymous, added: "I was here the night they tried to commit suicide.
"I was absolutely shocked, I woke up and there were four police cars and three ambulances.

"She didn't succeed, but he did.

"A body was taken away in a hearse and she went away in one of the ambulances."
Neighbours revealed Wendy, who still lives in the property where her husband died, has bought a small terrier named Rosie since the tragedy.

She is often seen walking the dog in the local area.
Coroner Tina Freedman recorded a verdict of suicide at the inquest in Folkestone.
She said: "It is never possible to know completely what somebody's intention is but I'm satisfied from the evidence that they wrote careful letters to their family that Mr Zabrocki did intentionally cause his own death."
