This is the sickening moment a giant whale shark is butchered alive to be sold on a market.

A large crowd gathered to watch as the fish - a protected species - was slowly sawed into pieces.



The gruesome process was caught on camera and uploaded to YouTube.

The video has sparked outrage among animal rights activists and shark conservation groups who have labelled it as "appalling."

Laying prostrate on the ground two men set to work on chopping the shark up, using a giant saw to slowly slice through its tail fin.
