Britain's most stupid car thief caught after he pressed lock and got trapped in vehicle

A man who climbed into an unlocked car accidentally pressed a 'door-lock' button intending to steal a wallet, iPad and car keys felt the long arm of the law when he accidentally LOCKED himself inside.

David Andrew Smith entered the vehicle when all the doors were unsecured.
But the 31-year-old pressed a 'door-lock' button when he was in there, and ended up having to smash his way out.


The bungling thief thought it was his night when he spotted a wallet, iPad and car keys inside the unlocked Ford Focus at 4am in Barrow, Cumbria.
But magistrates heard that as he crawled in to grab them, he unwittingly touched a button on the keys - which suddenly locked him in.

The judge heard confused Smith - who failed to realise he had pressed the fob - struggled to understand how the doors had locked "on their own."
The court was told as he was also high on drugs, he panicked - and eventually smashed the car window, crawled out and ran away.
Now the serial crook, also of Barrow, has admitted theft from a motor vehicle and possession of a heroin and will be sentenced next week.
