Hungry diners are being conned by takeaway pizza restaurants which routinely replace ham with turkey and use fake cheese topping.
Bosses at the “fakeaways” have been warned they may face prosecution
for the “dangerous” scam.
Pizzas from 15 fast-food outlets were checked and five had turkey instead of ham, while eight had a mix of cheese and cheese substitute – made with vegetable fat instead of milk.
The probe, which was carried out by Derbyshire County Council’s trading standards team, also found high levels of salt in the popular take-home meals.
The council stopped short of naming and shaming the restaurants, but Councillor Dave Allen, the member for health, said: “It’s important we keep consumers safe from any misleading or false information when it comes to what is in their food.
