Motorist in court for alleged non-possession of driver’s licence
A motorist, Muritala Nosiru, 68, was on Friday appeared before an
Ogudu Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for allegedly reckless driving without
driver’s licence and causing accident to another vehicle.
Muritala, a trader of Block 25, Flat 1, Medium Estate, Alapere, Lagos, was arraigned on a three-count charge.
The Magistrate, Mrs Sule Amzat, granted bail to the accused in the sum of N50, 000 with a surety in like sum.
Amzat ordered that the surety would produce evidence of residence, must not be self-employed, must be over 40 years old and a recent passport.
She also ordered that the surety’s residence and work address must be verified by the court.
The magistrate adjourned the matter till Sept. 23.
Earlier, the Prosecutor, Sgt. Lucky Ihiehie, had told the court that the accused committed the offences on Sept. 15, on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
He said he was alleged to have hit and caused serious damage to one Hyundai Accent car with Reg. No: AAA 257 BM, property of Sosaco Nig. Ltd.
He said the complainant, Bello Barka, driver of the company car, reported the matter to the police.
Ihiehie said the complainant was driving on Lagos-Ibadan expressway by old toll gate when a Mazda bus in front of him stopped to allow a wheel barrow pusher cross the road.
He said the complainant then slowed down and before he knew it, he heard a loud bang at the back of his car.
Ihiehie said the impact from the accused vehicle a Benz Jeep pushed the complainant’s car to hit the Mazda bus in front of him.
He said the offence contravened Sections 19 (1), item 1, Schedule 3 and Section 29(1) of the Road Traffic Law, 2012, which attracts a fine of N100, 000 or two years imprisonment or both.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges.
