An inmate who lost half his head after prison staff allegedly refused him antibiotics is taking legal action.

Robert Autry has been left unable to talk and has the mental age of a toddler after suffering appalling injuries while serving a sentence for drug possession.
A federal lawsuit filed on his behalf claims the 31-year-old developed a sinus infection while in Cleveland county jail.

Pleas: Autry repeatedly asked for antibiotics, his lawyer says
His mother Sandy Valentine said prison staff were repeatedly asked for medication or antibiotics, but it was never received.
She told local news station KFOR: “He's been home since April and has been making slow progress.
“He didn't get medical attention, he didn't get it."

Autry's condition worsened and caused his head to swell. Half of his skull had to be surgically removed.
"They deserve medical attention, they deserve it, just because you're an inmate doesn't mean you're second class," Valentine said.
"He can now feed himself, hold a cup and take drinks by himself. He can put one arm in his shirt - that's a big step for him.”

Autry now has the mind of a two-year-old, according to his mother.
"Just because you're an inmate, you don't get medical care? That's not right,”she said.
The family's attorney said the matter is a civil rights issue and intends to file a federal lawsuit.

Brian Busswell, their attorney told the news station: "By denying a person their healthcare, that's cruel and unusual."

Valentine added: “I don't want this happening to somebody else's son, somebody else's granddaughter, grandson.
