Twitter Considers Move Beyond 140 Characters

People may soon be able to tweet as much as they want in one post.

Twitter users may soon be able to tweet more than 140 characters.
Twitter is building a new product that would allow users to post content beyond 140 characters, a departure from what has been the signature feature of the social media site since its inception.

The tech blog Re/code reports that, in addition to the new product, company officials are also reconsidering how they measure the 140-character limit on their current product and have discussed removing certain text, including links and user names, from the count.


The company declined to comment on the developments for the Re/code report.
Twitter took a first step toward modifying its posting format in August, when it removed the 140-character limit on private direct messages between users after years of pressure.
It is uncertain when any changes might be made. The social media site has been seeking new leadership since its former CEO Dick Costolo resigned in June amid scrutiny from investors. Co-founder Jack Dorsey has been interim CEO since then, but he faces a dilemma of whether he would drop leadership of his mobile payment company, Square, if he succeeded Costolo permanently.
