AUTOMOBILE: toyota recalling millions of vehicles for window switch fire
This Toyota Camry hybrid might be far more exciting than its beige exterior implies, as it could suffer from a window-switch ailment that has forced the auto giant to recall some 6.7 million cars, trucks, and SUVs worldwide.
The problem stems from an insufficient amount of lubricating grease for the power-window master switch, which could allow moisture or debris into the unit, causing a short. The switch could then overheat and melt, increasing the risk of fire.
Some 2 million vehicles are affected in the United States. The list:
2007, 2009 Camry/Camry hybrid
2009–2011 Corolla
2008–2011 Highlander/Highlander hybrid
2009–2011 Matrix
2006–2011 RAV4
2009–2011 Sequoia
2009–2011 Tundra
2006–2010 Yaris
2009–2011 Scion xB
2009–2010 Scion xD
The remedy involves a check at the dealership; technicians will apply heat-resistant grease and inspect the switch. If it isn’t operating within spec, Toyota says, an internal circuit board will be replaced. Some models from the 2007, 2008, and 2009 model years had previously been recalled for the same issue. The Detroit News reports that 11 incidents have been filed with Toyota, including one burn injury.
