Authorities
in Kano have been giving more details about a fire which led to at
least seven female students killed and 25 others injured at a
government-run boarding school last night.
At least seven female students of Government Girls Secondary
School, Jogana, about 20 kilometers from the city of Kano, has been
reported dead in a tragic dormitory fire incident.
A Kano state official said that most of the deaths resulted from a
stampede as hundreds of students rushed to escape the blaze through two
exits.
The fire reportedly broke out in the biggest hostel of the school
when the students were sleeping, and for now, the cause of the fire
remains unknown.
A statement released yesterday night by Usman Bello, the director
of press to the deputy governor, stated that the fire had been put under
control in the night and the affected students were rushed to hospital.
The government has closed the boarding school and ordered full investigation into the fire.
