But now a former guide has revealed what is hidden behind the big blue doors of the Victoria Tunnel in Newcastle after being granted special access.
Through the darkness, the remains of a Second World War air-raid shelter are evident, the Newcastle Chronicle reports.

The tunnel was originally built to carry coal to the River Tyne before it became a place for people to take refuge during the bombing.
The Ouseburn section reopened as an occasional tourist attraction in 2009 and has drawn tourists from all over the country and even abroad.
