22 injured after bus loses race with train

 


When drivers attempt to beat trains to a railway crossing, it’s usually the train that wins.
That was the case yesterday afternoon in Tlajomulco, Jalisco, when a bus driver saw a chance to cross the tracks before an oncoming train and gunned it.
He almost made it.

The locomotive struck the back of the bus and hurled it across the road, where it came to rest against a utility pole.
No one was killed but 22 passengers aboard the bus were injured.
It was not the first such accident in Tlajomulco. Two people died late last year when another bus serving the same route also tried to outrun a train.

Now, municipal officials are getting impatient.
In a statement issued yesterday they called on the state government to move quickly to resolve problems with public transporation in the city, which they described as a “catastrophic situation.”
