A brother has been jailed for biting off his SISTER’s ear - despite her pleas to a judge to spare him

Stephen Summerhayes, 32, sank his teeth into sister Shelley on New Year’s Eve when he ran out of money for drink.
She gave him a £10 but he ripped it up as he demanded more and then tore off her ear.
She told a court: “I could feel my ear ripping. It was horrible. It was worse than childbirth.

“I was struggling to get him off me. We were struggling about a minute.”



Forgiving Shelley told Judge Barry Cotter QC the attack was ‘out of character’ caused by a dangerous cocktail of drink and drugs.
She told Bristol Crown Court: “This is not my brother’s nature. This is not my brother’s character.

“He doesn’t like fighting. He doesn’t like arguing. Me and my family all want him home.”
Kenneth Bell, prosecuting, said Summerhayes had invited two friends over on New Year’s Eve and they drank cider, lager and a bottle of whisky.
He said: “Mr Summerhayes was very, very drunk. He started being very aggressive to his sister about money. He was out of money. He wanted money.

Summerhayes, of Brentry, Bristol who had been living with his sister for two years, pleaded guilty to wounding her on December 31. Jennifer Tallentire, defending, urged the judge to impose a suspended jail term or treatment for alcohol and substance abuse.
But Judge Cotter jailed Summerhayes for a year, saying: “It was an extremely aggressive and barbaric assault.

“I take the view that I cannot accede to what is urged upon me and suspend the sentence of custody which must follow from such a serious offence.”
