Breaking News: EgyptAir flight terror at Larnaca Airport as man 'armed with explosive belt' holds passengers hostage

A hijacker armed with a suspected explosive belt has taken control of an EgyptAir plane and held passengers and crew are held on the tarmac at Larnaca Airport in Cyprus.
The flight was hijacked at around 8.30 local time (6.30 UK time) after a passenger threatened the pilot with what he claimed was an explosive belt shortly after the EgyptAir flight MS181 had taken off from Alexandria.


The plane - carrying 56 passengers and seven crew to the Egyptian capital Cairo - landed in Cyprus around 20 minutes later.
Local media reports state eight British people are on board and have identified a hijacker as 27-year-old Egyptian national Ibrahim Samaha.

The UK Foreign Office has said it is in contact with Cypriot and Egyptian authorities.


The hijacker was seen throwing a letter from the plane. Unconfirmed local media reports suggest the letter was intended for his ex-wife, who lives in Cyprus, and that he had demanded to speak to his estranged partner.
