Washington 'shooting': White House put on lockdown after shooter in US capital leaves policeman injured

The White House has reportedly been put on lock down after gunshots were reported in the US capital.

According to Reuters, one police officer was shot and the gunman is in police custody.
Other reports suggest that the officer was not seriously injured.


An email reportedly sent to staff at Capitol Hill instructed them to 'seek cover'.
It read: "U.S Capitol Police are locking down the entire U.S Capitol Complex due to a potential security threat.
"No one will be allowed to enter or exit any buildings.

"You may move about within the buildings and underground between buildings. If you are outside, seek cover."
One witness described how the White House was evacuated as everyone 'screamed and ran' from the scene.


Gunshots were heard in the U.S. Capitol Visitors Centre and workers were told to shelter and there was confusion in early accounts about what occurred.
The source said the officer's wounds were not serious.

A US Capitol Police officer, who asked not to be identified, said that the suspected shooter was being transported to hospital.
