Breaking: Roger Federer Pulls out of Madrid Masters

World no 3 Federer suffered the latest setback during practice Saturday and has decided to pull out as a precaution with the French Open barely weeks away, and the Rome Claycourt slated for next week, ESPN reports.


The 34-year-old Swiss described the back injury as “normal back things I’ve had in past.”
“I’m OK with it,” Federer told reporters. “At least I know what it is.”
“I’d rather play it safe and get ready for Rome. If I can’t play Rome, it’s not the end of the world, but hopefully I’ll get to play.”

Federer has played only three events this season having been sidelined for three months after undergoing knee surgery following his semifinal loss at the Australian Open to world no 1 Novak Djokovic.
The Swiss maestro, who won the Madrid Open in 2006, 2009 and 2012 becomes another high-profile name to drop out of the Madrid tournament after female world no 1 Serena Williams pulled out as a result of illness.

"I want to urge every woman to resist being discriminated against because of menstruation. I hope some people read wide and learn about menstrual health to stop the stereotype against young girls and women. "Yes my menses appeared 30 minutes to my performance and I had to put on a sanitary pad and still go on stage. "Menstruation is not a shame and I urge all young women take a cue from my actions and not to let it stop them from doing anything they want to do."
