A man who 'lost control' and stabbed his flatmate through the heart
after she refused him sex has been jailed for 17 years for her murder. Gary Stevenson,
killed 25-year-old Katy Rourke at the flat they shared in Govan,
Glasgow, in December last year after the pair had been drinking.
The
27-year-old told a court he had been a "pressure cooker" waiting to
blow and the "wheels were coming off" in many areas of his personal life
before the "wrong place, wrong time" attack. He said he
"cracked" and "totally lost control" before repeatedly punching Ms
Rourke, originally from Broughty Ferry near Dundee, then getting a
kitchen knife and stabbing her three times.
Gary Stevenson has admitted murdering his flatmate after claiming she refused to have sex with him.
He pleaded guilty to the murder last month and the case had been continued for background reports. Jailing
him for life at the High Court in Edinburgh today, judge Lady Rae said
he should reflect on having "needlessly and brutally" taken Ms Rourke's
life.
Following the backlash that trailed her performance at Shatta Wale's Reign Concert over the weekend, Ghanaian singer, Fantana has now released a statement. The singer stated that she is not ashamed of being a woman and also mesntruating. Her statement read in part; "Regardless of my costume being transparent, my only option was to put on a sanitary pad and still go ahead to perform. I am a woman and I’m not ashamed of menstruating. "I want to urge every woman to resist being discriminated against because of menstruation. I hope some people read wide and learn about menstrual health to stop the stereotype against young girls and women. "Yes my menses appeared 30 minutes to my performance and I had to put on a sanitary pad and still go on stage. "Menstruation is not a shame and I urge all young women take a cue from my actions and not to let it stop them from doing anything they want to do."
