English Channel swimmer Nick Thomas dies during tragic attempt to cross to France

Swimmer Nick Thomas has died while trying to cross the English Channel.
The 45-year-old endurance athlete, from Ellesmere in Shropshire, had been swimming for around 16 hours when he got into difficulties, the Channel Swimming and Piloting Federation told the BBC.
A tweet from Enduroman events paid tribute to Mr Thomas, stating: "Our friend Nick Thomas left us whilst doing what he loved - he just kept going. He'll always be a part of what we do and who we are."

Rescuers pulled him out of the water 10 miles from the coast of Calais and administered CPR, but he later died in hospital.
The veteran Ironman and Ultraman triathlete was crowned Enduroman #19 in 2014, according to the Shropshire Star.
His last tweet on August 15 read: "On standby and Still awaiting a chance to start swim, new tides start today and weather dictates there will be no swimmers in near future."
Before that, on August 4, he wrote: "Morning dip, just ticking over awaiting judgement day.

"Yes my menses appeared 30 minutes to my performance and I had to put on a sanitary pad and still go on stage. "Menstruation is not a shame and I urge all young women take a cue from my actions and not to let it stop them from doing anything they want to do."
