Imam shot dead in New York and his assistant blasted in chest as they walked home after prayers
A gunman has opened fire on and killed a Muslim imam, blasting him in the head after afternoon prayers.
His assistant is also understood to have been hit in the chest in the deadly New York shooting, leaving him in a critical condition.
The suspect is believed to have been a lone gunman who struck just a block away from the Al-Furqan Jame Masjid Mosque in Ozone Park, Queens.
The incident occurred just before 2pm following the men's afternoon prayers and police said it was unclear if the killer said anything before opening fire.
Local resident Khairul Islam, 33, told the New York Daily News : “That’s not what America is about.
“We blame Donald Trump for this ... Trump and his drama has created Islamophobia.”
Another resident, Millat Uddin, 25, told the same website: “People being shot in the head in broad daylight is unheard of, killing people brutally, like they’re an animal.”
The imam has not been named but locals described him as well-respected.
Witnesses said the shooter was tall and dark-skinned, carrying a large handgun
