Rio Olympics: Nigerians Hail Dream Team VI’s Victory

It may not have resonated with the rest of the world, but the 5-4 triumph of Nigeria’s male U-23 team over their Japanese foes hours after touching down in Manaus for their Group B Olympic soccer tournament encounter has been hailed by Nigerians as a mental victory, one which could see the team go far in the tournament or emulate the heroics of their Atlanta ’96 Dream Team.

Nigeria’s inability to air-lift out of Atlanta, Georgia, United States of America, became a global issue, as even the Cable News Network (CNN) joined the debate an wondered if the team would make it to Manaus before the encounter.
Nigerians, in their reaction, have hailed the win as a statement by Coach Samson Siasia and his lads that they are ready to face and overcome every foe in their way to Olympic gold, just as they overcame every discouraging factor which they encountered while in camp.
Abdul Kolo, a football-lover, in New Karu, Nasarawa State, called the victory a shame to the Nigerian government, who had earlier denied the team attention and any form of subvention while they were in camp.
“The win is a shame for the government and the Ministry of Sports & Youth Development. The win means that the team is not scared of anyone or any situation and this win means that they are ready to make a statement against any team,” Kolo said.
