A GIFTED local footballer who lost both his legs in a devastating hit-and-run crash has saluted fans who turned out to support him at a charity match yesterday

A gifted footballer who lost both his legs in an horror ' hit-and-run crash' has thanked supporters in an emotional speech.
Shaun Whiter, 27, was left with devastating injuries after a car careered off the road and crushed him up against his own vehicle .
His life was turned upside down after he lost both legs in the crash - but thousands of friends and well-wishers have rallied behind him at so far raised nearly £100,000 to support him and pal Joey Abbs who was also injured in the crash.

He took his chance to thank fans during a charity match at the weekend in Newmarket, Suffolk.
The talented amateur player attended the match between Ipswich and Newmarket Town with his friend Joey, 31, and his fiancée Charlotte Way, 27.
Joey, who plays for Soham, is also recovering from serious muscle damage to his right leg after the horror smash nearby on July 1 made national headlines.
Family, friends and team-mates have now raised a staggering £100,000 to support the two good pals, with about £8,500 raised by Newmarket Town yesterday.

Emotional Shaun said: “It is so good to see loads of people here, it is all supporting a good cause.
“It is great to be here getting some fresh air.
“It’s a huge chance to say thank you to everyone who is supporting us – they’ve all been fantastic.”
He added: “I got out of hospital on Friday and it is good being back home again.
“Just being able to get outside in the fresh air has been brilliant.”
Shaun, who was due to sign for Newmarket this season, is set to marry his sweetheart Charlotte on July 21, 2017.
And the Stansted-based estate agent has vowed to make it his mission to walk down the aisle on their Big Day.
Charlotte set up a fundraising page to net the cash needed to get him the best care possible and is targeting £120,000.

Shaun said he is now preparing for “a lot of rehab” with the help of physiotherapists.
Speaking at half-time, Joey said the support he and Shaun have had over the last few weeks showed the good side of football.
“Football has a bit of a bad name,” he said.
“But this is what it is really about, the football community pulling together.
