Orlando Pirates have not retired the jersey that was worn by late goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa.
Meyiwa passed away in 2014 after he was gunned down at his girlfriend’s house in Johannesburg. Police are still yet to make any arrests related to the former Bafana Bafana captain’s murder.
Pirates goalkeeper Brighton Mhlongo, who wore number 16 last season, wore number one during the Absa Premiership match against Ajax Cape Town on Tuesday night, much to the surprise of many football supporters.
Bucs administrative official Floyd Mbele has cleared the air regarding the jersey number one at Mayfair.
“The jersey was not retired and hence we saw Brighton Mhlongo wearing jersey number one,” Mbele confirms to KickOff.com.
Pirates chairman Irvin Khoza stated categorically in 2014 that the jersey "would never be worn again" but appears to have changed his stance.
The Soweto giants retired both Lesley Manyathela and Clifford Moleko’s jerseys after they passed away in vehicle accidents.
