Now You Can Fuel Your Car With Greenhouse Gas...

Scientists at Oak Ridge National Laboratory have accidentally discovered an efficient way to convert carbon dioxide–a greenhouse gas–into ethanol fuel. Researchers were testing ways of converting CO2 into fuel and realized the first step in their process easily did just that.

They triggered a chemical reaction in a combination of carbon, copper, and nitrogen. Nanotechnology allowed them to make the reactions very precise. The CO2 dissolved in water, with 63 percent of the solution turning into ethanol. The process can be done at room temperature, allowing for low energy costs. Scientists are hoping to expand this conversion process for large-scale industrial applications.
