Tiger Woods never will be what he once was, but can he compete enough to matter?

Think of this as more of a data probe by Tiger Woods than a comeback. His first competitive appearance on a golf course in 16 months will be attended by a dual sense of expectation and consequence. If he can’t play halfway decently this week under Caribbean-vacation circumstances, that’s it. 


What he will get from those Bahamian breezes is either a fresh career wind, or a strong whiff of the washed-up. The Hero World Challenge in Nassau is limited to 18 top players, with no cut, on a golf course where Bubba Watson shot 25 under last year. It’s a user-friendly test, a relatively low-key environment in which Woods will see whether he can swing a club for four straight rounds without reinjuring himself,
