Continuous Detention of Suspects without trial harms Nigeria as a whole
I will write from a layman point of view after all the acclaimed evidence has been gathered by the FG, police, Prosecution.
Once the investigation has been concluded, the public prosecutor may decide to prosecute a suspect. In this case, the suspect will be issued with a notice of summons and accusation,
detailing the precise charges against him as well as his rights. It also states when and where the district court will hear the case. The public prosecutor may also decide not to prosecute, for example if there is insufficient evidence against the suspect.
That said the continued detention of persons in prison across the country with or without substantial evidences against them, is barbaric and inhuman. The Federal Governments whose aims are witchhunting and revenge should release detained prisoners on the orders of several courts of competent jurisdiction. It is unlawful to keep anyone in detention for more than 3 days without charging them to court.
Nigeria belongs to Nigerians not a selected few and if someone does wrong, he should be punished if and only if it Has been proven beyond reasonable doubt.
NB: People frame another, bribe the police to torture their victims to write a confession indicting themselves. All fine and good, they have succeeded, they have won, bravo! The only recourse these victims/suspects have is the day their names are called upon while in incaceration, the day lawyers would truthfully defend them through the course of trial. Accelerated hearing should be forced by the judiciary to be enforces for these people to know their faith as quickly band mentally possible.
I Urge the FG to unconditionally release some inmates who have been arrested and detained and have been left to languish in prison. Amongst others who are unknown are Nnamdi kalu, Dasuki, El-Zakzaky, and others.
