US Father Sentenced to Life in Prison for Leaving Son to Die in Hot Car

Wonders, it is said will never end. Justin Ross Harris, 36, was found guilty last month of the 22-month-old boy’s death in June 2014 in a carpark in Atlanta, Georgia.

Harris told the court he forgot to drop the boy at his daycare, however a trial earlier heard he swapped sexual text messages with a teenage girl while in the sweltering SUV with his son, CBS News reported.
Evidence supported the prosecutor’s accusation that Harris knew his son was in the car, and he deliberately left him locked inside to die to escape his family life.

The Associated Press reports that Harris received a malice murder conviction last month. On Monday, Cobb County Superior Court Judge Mary Staley Clark sentenced Harris to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
The woman, now 19, testified in the trial that she met Harris online in 2013.
The court also heard Harris had researched online how long and at what temperature it would take a person to die in a hot car.
The boy, Cooper Harris, died from hyperthermia associated with sitting in the extreme heat for seven hours, as outside temperatures soared to 32 degrees, the BBC reported.

Investigators said the temperature inside the car reached as high as 48 degrees.
Cobb County Superior Court Judge Mary Staley Clark labelled his actions “horrific”. She added an extra 32 years to Harris’ sentence – the maximum allowed by law based on the charges against him.
