 Hadiza El-Rufai wants more women in golf

The wife of Kaduna State governor, Hadiza El-Rufai, has called on Nigerian women to take to the game of golf because of its numerous benefits.

El-Rufai who teed off the 19th edition of IBB Golf Club Ladies Open Championship in Abuja on Thursday, said she was pleased with the increased interest of ladies in the game.


“It is really wonderful to see that there are many ladies that are interested now,” she said. “Usually, ladies don’t like to play this game.”

“I think we should encourage more women to come in because it is a game that one should really cultivate early because when you are much older, you can still have some form of exercise.”

On her part, the Delta State Commissioner of Women, Community and Social Development, Rev. Mrs. Omatsola Williams commended lady golfers in Nigeria for promoting the game in the country.

“Usually when we have Ladies Open, it’s an opportunity to allow ladies to come and participate,” she added.

Speaking also at the teeing off ceremony, the Lady Captain of IBB Golf Club, Lami Ahmed said the turn out of participants in this edition was huge compared to previous editions.

“We have nothing less than 160 ladies who have come from around the world to participate,” she said.

The championship which started on Thursday is expected to end tomorrow at the prestigious IBB Golf and Country Club, Abuja.
