In one of the cases DPA is handling now, the man had the police arrest his estranged wife, accusing her conspiring with her father not to refund the bride price he paid on her. The man told the police that his wife was a bad woman. He told them that his father in law had collected 100k bride price from another man, but has refused to refund his own bride price. I am sure you will wonder what the police would be doing with a case of bribe price refund. But wait.
The police summoned the lady's father. They questioned him on the bribe price that he was alleged to have received from the second man. Do you know that the police wanted to see the bride price? When they were told that the old man did not collect any bride price from the second man, the police officers insisted that they must see the money. They called the money a piece evidence that they needed to keep. (For what crime?).
I came to the conclusion that the police were trying to collect a commission from the bride price, if not to seize the entire money. This is the situation of the police today in Nigeria. It has never been this bad.
