Can the Government please stop crucifying us just for breaking the speed limit?

The fact of the matter is this: Everyone breaks the speed limit.
Sometimes that’s because it’s too low. Sometimes it’s because you’re thinking about something else for a moment or two. And sometimes it’s because you are in a hurry.

Or because there’s a really nice bend coming up and you’re in a great car, and it’s five o’clock in the morning on a lovely day. And no one is looking.
And yet, despite this wholesale ­disobedience, Britain has the second-lowest rate of road casualties per head of any country on earth. Our motorways are, by some ­distance, the safest roads in the world.
So the only reason why ­penalties for speeding have been altered is to raise more money in fines.
And that would be OK if only the Government would be honest.

Prison is for criminals, not just motorists who annoy BBC Radio 2 host Jeremy Vine

They need to drop the points ­system completely, save ­disqualification for the lunatics and understand that prison is for criminals. Not ordinary motorists who happen to annoy Jeremy Vine.
Then they should start to call the “fines” a “tax”. Because that’s what they are.
We’d all understand that and we could make a choice — drive under the speed limit and save money or drive over it and cough up.
