How has Donald Trump’s first 100 days gone in office?

Here’s a look at what he promised and how he’s performing on some of his key pledges.

The Wall

He had people chanting ‘Build the wall’ at campaign rallies, insisting Mexico would pay for it. Signing an executive order to start construction was one of his first actions as president.

But progress has stalled, with Mexico refusing to pay, forcing Trump to propose immediate budget cuts of 18 billion dollars from US programmes like medical research, infrastructure and community grants. Democrats of-course were not in support of this either. Case closed.

Immigration

Trump pledged to ‘suspend immigration from terror-prone regions’ and introduce ‘extreme vetting’ at the border.

One week after taking office, he tried to ban all immigration from seven Muslim-majority nations.
But judges blocked both the initial and a revised travel ban, leaving this cornerstone pledge snarled up in a legal fight.

Nato

During his campaign, Trump said the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation was ‘obsolete’ and criticised other members for not paying their fair share.

However, he has now made a complete U-Turn, standing in solidarity next to the Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.
‘I said it was obsolete. It’s no longer obsolete,’ Trump said.
He also repeated calls for countries to meet a 2014 agreement to boost defence spending to 2% of gross domestic product over the next decade.

Russia

Until he took office, Trump said a closer relationship with Russia was a ‘good thing’, claimed Russian president Vladimir Putin had called him a ‘genius’ and suggested the country would ‘respect us far more’ once he took office.

But Trump’s administration has been plagued with allegations of Russian hacking during the election campaign, as well as an FBI probe into the president’s associates’ alleged improper ties with the country.
And Putin’s refusal to abandon Syrian president Bashar Assad over a chemical weapons attack on civilians has seen Trump admit relations could be at an ‘all-time low’.

Jobs

‘We will bring back our jobs,’ Trump said again and again, in particular in the disenchanted Rust Belt.
Earlier this month, Mr Trump said ‘we’ve created more than almost 600,000 jobs’ in the first three months of 2017, saying companies including Ford, Fiat-Chrysler, General Motors, Intel and Walmart were hiring thanks to him.

But in fact he had inflated the official figure of 533,000 jobs and took credit for growth that had, in several cases, been planned by companies before his election.
Average monthly job creation was slightly down on last year at 178,000.
He did fulfil his pledge to withdraw from the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal – which he had described as a ‘job killer’.

China

Trump promised to get tough on China by labeling the country a currency manipulator.
But several months later, after meeting with Xi Jinping in Florida, he said: ‘Why would I call China a currency manipulator when they are working with us on the North Korean problem?
‘We will see what happens!’

Obamacare

Just a week before the election in November, Trump vowed to ‘immediately repeal and replace Obamacare’ – his predecessor’s landmark healthcare reform.

But his first major piece of legislation had to be withdrawn after House Republican leaders failed to win enough support to put it to a vote.
Mr Trump has since said he ‘never’ pledged to achieve the aim in the first 64 days, while it would not be in the ‘very distant future’ before he tried again.

Supreme Court

Mr Trump nominated conservative judge Neil Gorsuch to replace the late Antonin Scalia as a Supreme Court Justice, prompting an outcry by Democrats.

But the Republican-controlled Senate extended a 2013 rule change to allow approval of judicial nominations to the Supreme Court by a simple majority, meaning they could confirm the president’s pick.

Golf

Trump criticised Obama for golfing during the Louisiana floods in August and amid lengthy airport security delays in May.
But according to US website PolitiFact’s Trump Golf Tracker, the so called ‘Golfer-in-Chief’ has played 14 times so far compared to his predecessor’s zero over the same period in 2009.

Final score

In all, Trump made 38 promises setting out his immediate and short-term priorities once in office and so far he has accomplished 10.
But Trump is unlikely to see this as a shortcoming.
‘No matter how much I achieve, media will kill,’ he claimed.

Well seems the media really killed this.
