Zambia Opposition Chief's Treason Case Starts, Judge Orders His Rights Be Respected

Hakainde Hichilema, Zambia’s main opposition leader appeared in a Magistrate Court in the capital, Lusaka, for the commencement of his treason trial.
Hichilema who leads the United Party for National Development (UPND) was arrested last week for endangering the life of the sitting president Edgar Lungu.


He is said to have refused to give way to the convoy of the President as required by law. The police arrested him at his residence and subsequently charged him with treason. Other charges against him include disobedience of lawful orders and using insulting language on police officers.
