"I've just received a call from a "correctional" facility" Lawyers React To Law Changing Name of Nigerian Prison Service to Correctional Facility.
Recall that President Buhari had on Wednesday 13th August, 2019 signed a bill to law changing the name of the Nigerian Prisons Service to Nigerian Correctional Service. This bill was signed 11 years after it was first presented on the floor of the Senate.
Surfice it to state that the dilapidation state of the Nigeria prisons demonstrates a condition that cannot guarantee the reformatory process of the inmates even with the change in its name and this can be attributed to the disregard for the welfare of the inmates and failure to implement the prison reforms recommendations.
We therefore urge the government to look into the challenges facing the prisons. As fast we are concerned, no matter the name changed, it won't stop Nigerians from using the word 'prison' just as PHCN still remains NEPA as there hasn't been any major changes so far.
Here's how some lawyers have reacted to this.
