Nollywood Mourns a Titan: Legendary Actor Olu Jacobs Passes Away at 84

The curtain has fallen on one of the most distinguished chapters in African cinema. Today Wednesday, 16 September 2026, veteran Nigerian actor, cultural icon, and film executive Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs revered across the continent and beyond simply as Olu Jacobs passed away at the age of 84. Freelanews.com shared.

The heartbreaking news was confirmed in a public statement shared by his son, Olusoji Jacobs, via Instagram, as reported by TVC News. The family statement formally commemorated his life with the dates 11 July 1942 – 16 September 2026, requesting privacy and understanding from the public and the creative community as they navigate this profound loss.

Olu Jacobs leaves behind a towering legacy, alongside his beloved wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, and his children including his sons and daughter who shared in the journey of a man celebrated both as a patriarch at home and an institution on screen.

Long before I was born and Nollywood became the global commercial powerhouse it is today, Olu Jacobs was pioneering the path for African dramatic talent.

Trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London, he honed his craft across British television and stage productions, appearing in notable international works including The Dogs of War, Baby: Secret of the Lost Legend, and The Tomorrow People before returning home to build the foundations of contemporary Nigerian cinema.

He would forever be missed.

Adieu great Titan
